Top 17 new PS5 games to play in 2025
Everyone here on the TrueTrophies Writing Team — that's Editor in Chief Kes, News Editor Lee, and Staff Writers Sean and Jamie — have come together to list off what they believe to be the most exciting new PS5 games of 2025.In the following list of 17 titles, we'll talk you through why we think these are all the most anticipated PS5 games of 2025. Just note that this isn't the full list of games coming next year — you can check out our upcoming PS5 games list for that — and that these games may get delayed as the year unfolds.
17. Dynasty Warriors Origins
- Wrap your head around these Dynasty Warriors Origins trophies
- Release date: January 17, 2025
- At a glance: The latest Dynasty Warriors game where you play as a powerful warrior taking on thousands of enemies at once with heroes and stories inspired by real world events
- Get ready for launch: Play the Dynasty Warriors Origins demo and get a free preview of the title ahead of launch
Origins will feature over-the-top action, grand battles, duels, and a variety of familiar faces. While I would prefer being able to play as all the different warriors we know and love rather than this unknown protagonist, I am still very excited. Everything is looking positive for Origins and the demo was an absolute blast to play through. I can't wait for the full release in January 2025.
16. The Alters
- Take a look at those The Alters trophies
- Release date: TBA 2025
- At a glance: Help the protagonist survive by creating dozens of clones of himself and escaping the dangers of an alien world and the strange minds of each new clone
- Get ready for launch: This is another game you really can't prepare for because it's so unique, but playing a base management title similar to Fallout Shelter is a good start
As you can imagine, the Alters can get along but also bicker and fight if their personalities clash on a deeper level. Jan must go on expeditions to find supplies and conduct research so everyone can survive, but it's hard to do that when you could return to a mysteriously missing clone or a bloodbath.
The game is as much about survival as it is about base and people management, both of which you'll be doing in spades. There's nothing like a bit of in-fighting on a planet that's trying to kill you every second of every day.
15. Baby Steps
- Check out all the Baby Steps trophies
- Release date: TBA 2025
- At a glance: A walking simulator with dozens of hazards and a character who you must move by controlling every limb individually
- Get ready for launch: There's really no way to prepare for this, but Octodad Dadliest Catch should give you an idea of how challenging it will be to play
My hope is that Baby Steps encapsulates everything I love about stupid games with its ridiculous slapstick take on the walking simulator genre. I just want to laugh and have a good time, and if I also happen to get really invested in the story, and if the developers decide to take this to excitingly weird places, I'll be even happier.
14. Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii
- Take a look at those Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii trophies
- Release date: February 20, 2025
- At a glance: The latest Like a Dragon entry which shifts the setting from the hustle and bustle of city life to the open seas
- Get ready for launch: Play Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth to get a sense of what this series is about, but nothing can prepare you for where this latest entry is about to take it
Amazingly, the game appears to combine the active turn-based battles of Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth with a combat-heavy pirate ship sailing overworld — an incredibly unique turn for the series. This latest entry looks like it's doubling down on the zany side of things, and I couldn't be more excited to see where it goes and what it'll have me doing.
13. Deltarune Chapters 3&4
- The highly anticipated third and fourth chapters in the Undertale spin-off series
- Release date: TBA 2025
- At a glance: The next major story beats in the unique RPG Deltarune
- Get ready for launch: Play through Deltarune Chapters 1&2 to get caught up on the story
This quasi-sequel-prequel to Undertale has already given us two of the most memorable slices of RPG video gaming ever made, and the next two slices promise to be the most substantial to date. This game is basically all I'll be thinking about in 2025, and I hope you'll join me in eagerly anticipating a real good time.
12. Borderlands 4
- Check out those Borderlands 4 trophies
- Release date: TBA 2025
- At a glance: An open-world sic-fi FPS looter shooter with more guns than you can mathematically comprehend
- Get ready for launch: Play Borderlands 3 and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands for the best, most comparable experience, and dive into older games in the series if you love them and have time
I really enjoyed the gameplay loop of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands with its more engrossing overworld map and several smaller locations. Whether that bleeds into this latest entry remains to be seen, but a Mass Effect-style galactic map for the planets we move between wouldn't go amiss.
11. Split Fiction
- Grab a friend or use the built-in friend pass to play through the sci-fi and fantasy worlds of this co-op-only title packed with puzzles, combat, and a gripping story
- Release date: March 6, 2025
- At a glance: A co-op action game where the protagonists become trapped in their own works of sci-fi and fantasy fiction
- Get ready for launch: Play developer Hazelight Studios' past titles: It Takes Two, available as a PS Plus Essential title in December 2024, and A Way Out
One story has a fantasy setting, the other a sci-fi setting, and players must work through levels across both. Every level has a new mechanic that evolves over time to keep it interesting and ensure you're always thinking. For example, one sci-fi level uses tech suits for combat, climbing, and pinball puzzles, while a fantasy level has dragons that grow in size and power from start to finish.
Hazelight Studios has pulled out all the stops with Split Fiction, making for a game I'm certain you'll force your friends into playing just so you can see their reactions. The built-in friend pass means you can play co-op with anyone worldwide if you don't have someone to play co-op at home with. Either way, we're in for a good time with this title.
10. The Outer Worlds 2
- From the creators of Fallout New Vegas, The Outer Worlds was an enthralling open-world RPG where nothing was off limits, including main story-essential NPCs right at the start of the game
- Release date: TBA 2025
- At a glance: An open-world sci-fi first-person RPG with an immersive overbearing corporate world aesthetic
- Get ready for launch: Play The Outer Worlds Spacer's Choice Edition to catch up with the story so far
The PS5 reveal trailer for The Outer Worlds 2 was filled with all of the RPG carnage that I could ask for and I am feeling pumped and ready for an official release date to be announced. The weapons, location, combat, and character design all look top notch and I can't wait to experience it all firsthand when the opportunity comes around.
9. Doom The Dark Ages
- Take a look at those Doom The Dark Ages trophies
- Release date: TBA 2025
- At a glance: A prequel to Doom 2016 with the same gameplay in a medieval sci-fi setting
- Get ready for launch: Play Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal to get a feel for the gameplay you'll be thrown into when this game rolls around
Doom Eternal pushed this series' moment-to-moment gameplay of killing demons in a sort of gory dance to its limit in terms of ranged weapons. I suspect we'll see that same formula taken to a similar level with melee-focused weapons in Doom The Dark Ages, and I can't wait to slay a demon taller than a skyscraper with my massive laser-winged dragon.
8. Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered
- Beautifully remastered versions of Tomb Raider 4-6 in the same style as the fantastic Tomb Raider I-III Remastered
- Release date: February 14, 2025
- At a glance: Remastered versions of Tomb Raider IV, V, and VI with a few extra features on PS5
- Get ready for launch: Play Tomb Raider I-III Remastered to relive these classics and prepare to immerse yourself once again
So, getting to replay these classic titles is a walk down nostalgia lane that I just can't get enough of. Heck, I'm even excited to revisit Tomb Raider The Angel Of Darkness. I'm a firm believer that with a little more polish that game could have been an astounding success. Here's hoping Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered delivers on that. I don't have long to wait, but it feels like February is still a million years away!
7. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
- Check out those Kingdom Come Deliverance II trophies
- Release date: February 4, 2025
- At a glance: An open-world RPG set in 15th-century Bohemia where you make your stand against a Roman emperor
- Get ready for launch: Play Kingdom Come Deliverance to catch up on the story so far
This sequel is streamlining some of the systems that didn't work in KCD1, making the world slightly larger and denser, and continuing Henry's rise. If Warhorse nails those three things, I think Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 could well be that 'surprise megahit' game of early 2025 and I welcome it with open arms. Henry's coming to see us!
6. Monster Hunter Wilds
- Check out those Monster Hunter Wilds trophies
- Release date: TBA 2025
- At a glance: A semi-open world monster hunting game where you kill colossal creatures and use their parts for armor and weapons
- Get ready for launch: Play Monster Hunter World or Monster Hunter Rise to get an idea of what to expect from this next game
The game will be much closer to the multiplayer-centric Monster Hunter World, allowing players to team up for quests and assist those in need. Of course, it also ups the ante with phenomenal new monsters to hunt alongside iconic creatures like Rathalos.
The real draw of Monster Hunter Wilds is its interconnected world — monsters will roam freely and battle each other or work together, depending on how much they get on. It'll make for an adventure you could sink 100+ hours into through a combination of gameplay and ecological interest alone.
5. Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater
- Check out those Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater trophies
- Release date: TBA 2025
- At a glance: A faithful remaster of the phenomenal stealth espionage action title Metal Gear solid 3 Snake Eater
- Get ready for launch: Play Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater to run through the story and see the massive step up in this remaster, and play the first two games as well if time allows
Saying all that, maybe it's just the lack of Metal Gear Solid in my life, but I can't help it — I miss this franchise. Plus, if we're going to bring MGS somehow, I'd rather MGS Delta's approach of preserving the cutscenes and performances of the original, and just messing around with gameplay a little bit. I'm certainly more excited about that than I would be for a new Metal Gear Solid game sans its creator, so I'll take it.
4. Assassin's Creed Shadows
- Take a look at those Assassin's Creed Shadows trophies
- Release date: February 14, 2025
- At a glance: A massive open-world RPG entry in the Assassin's Creed series set in feudal Japan with dual protagonists
- Get ready for launch: Play Assassin's Creed Valhalla to experience the flavor of this next entry, and enjoy the series from the start if you have the time
Playing as Yasuke, an African samurai, you'll go into combat loud and take enemies out in large groups with little more than sheer strength and a sharp mace. Meanwhile, playing as shinobi Naoe, you'll take enemies out from the shadows in classic Assassin's Creed style.
I'm hesitant about this game being part of the broader, less focused set of recent Assassin's Creed titles, but the fact that you can enjoy it all as either protagonist without ruining the story is great. From the sounds of things, the story will be a lot tighter in this game, and most importantly, we'll finally get to be assassins in Japan!
3. Death Stranding 2 On The Beach
- Check out those Death Stranding 2 On The Beach trophies
- Release date: TBA 2025
- At a glance: A post-apocalyptic story about uniting humanity after the end of the world
- Get ready for launch: Play Death Stranding now with a PS Plus Extra subscription
It's difficult to say what the gameplay loop will look like, but it should bring back package collection and deliveries, establishing connections, and BT encounters. I'm sure that the developer has really pushed the boat out for the sequel and that we'll have more vehicles, upgrades, and strange characters to meet every step of the way.
2. Ghost of Yotei
- Check out those Ghost of Yotei trophies
- Release date: TBA 2025
- At a glance: An open-world RPG set in Hokkaido, Japan in 1603 where you play as a long samurai
- Get ready for launch: Play Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut with a PS Plus Extra subscription to get a feel for what this game will be like
Seeing the creators of that game return for Ghost of Yotei in hopes of telling a different story in a later period of Japan's history — that's reason enough to get excited. Add into the mix the fact that they'll have had the time to max out what the PS5 can do with this next game and you can color me officially hyped.
That's all without going into the second major reason to get excited for this one: the fact that Ghost of Yotei marks a shift in Sony's PS5 plans going forward. A refocus on single-player games kicking off with one the most anticipated single-player PS5 games of 2025? I can hardly wait.
1. Grand Theft Auto VI
- Check out those Grand Theft Auto VI trophies
- Release date: TBA 2025
- At a glance: An open-world action game with unprecedented freedom in an incredibly detailed simulated world
- Get ready for launch: Play Grand Theft Auto V to get a taste of the type of game you're in for
Let me be perfectly clear: no PS5 game could possibly be more hotly anticipated than Grand Theft Auto VI. I know first-hand several non-gamers in real life who have threatened to purchase a PS5 just to play this game. For many, it's a game that sells itself; people don't even need to know if it's any good before they buy it!
For what it's worth though, GTA VI looks good. Putting the focus on a bank-robbing couple for the story? That's legitimately cool; we don't have a game about that yet! I love that even when it doesn't "have to" (it'll still print money), Rockstar will not stop putting genuine effort into GTA as a single-player experience. I already know you're excited, but this stuff is what gets me excited too.
Which games coming out in 2025 are you most excited about? Do you reckon some of these titles will be among the best PS5 games released on the console so far? Let us know which ones, whether they're on this list or not, in the comments.
